David Lea Altman, Sr., a cherished father, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth-Boardman. Born on August 8, 1942, in Leetonia, he was the son of the late George and Margaret (Louise) Dunlap Altman, and he grew up as one of 11 siblings.
David proudly served his country as a boatswain's mate and fireman in the U.S. Navy. His military career included significant time overseas, with ports of call in Spain and service aboard the USS Saratoga during the tense period just before the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Following his military service, David embarked on a 44-year career at General Motors, where he specialized as a Final Line A/C specialist before his well-earned retirement. David was actively involved in his community, volunteering his time to run the voting polls in Washingtonville.
David had a remarkable ability to remember the little things that mattered to people, often surprising friends and family with their favorite treats upon visiting his home. He was revered as the best dad ever, pouring his love into every dish he cooked or baked. His culinary skills were especially evident in his cookies, breads, pies, and muffins, which were always made in generous batches, sharing with his family and friends. David was also a great singer, and he took great pride tending to his flowers and making sure his yard always looked immaculate.
David could strike up a conversation with anyone. His deep love for his grandchildren and his adoration for his wife were evident in every aspect of his life.
David's legacy is carried on by his loving children, Bethanne (Rich) Saccerich, Georgane (Ron) Pyles, Randall (Tiffany) Altman, and David (Sonya) Altman, Jr.; his 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two brothers, and four sisters. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Judith, who passed away in 2014, as well as his three brothers, and one sister.
Friends and family are invited to share in the celebration of David's life during visitation hours from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home. A service will be held the following morning, March 15, 2024, at noon, with an additional hour of visitation prior. David will be laid to rest at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.
David Lea Altman, Sr.'s life was a life of service, family, and friendship, and his memory will continue to inspire and comfort those he has left behind.
